If you’re anything like me, you just can’t get enough of babies! Their sweet chubby cheeks, bright little eyes, and perfect lips. . . You just wanna squeeze them! Well, I’m really excited to share some photos of one of the sweetest baby girls out there right now. But this is more than a post about a beautiful baby girl. It’s the story of a family’s journey. A story that I joined October 31st, 2010.

Back up a little bit. . . Sometime in September 2010 I started applying to be part of Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit organization that helps families deal with infant loss through portraiture. The organization is made up of a network of volunteer photographers all around the country that respond to calls from families and hospitals dealing with the loss of an infant before/during birth and show up to do some of the only portraits these families will have with their little one. I had been thinking about joining for months but just hadn’t worked up the courage. I have a very tender heart. I didn’t think that I could deal with grieving families and tears and sadness. But as I read more about the NILMDTS mission : “To introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture. We believe these images serve as an important step in the family’s healing process by honoring their child’s legacy” and read stories from their photographers, I knew I should join.

I finally sent in my application and was accepted as a volunteer photographer. Honestly, I didn’t give it much thought after I was accepted until I received the phone call on October 31st. A local hospital – about an hour from my house – had a family in need of a NILMDTS photographer and couldn’t find anyone else willing to come out at such short notice. Jonathan and I were headed to a friend’s house so we quickly turned around, got my camera, printed directions to the hospital, and I left for Chapel Hill. I cried all the way to the hospital. Fast forward a little bit and I was in Kasey + Adam’s delivery room. There were parents and siblings and nurses and everyone seemed so happy to see me… We went through the process of photographing baby Annabelle with her family and I couldn’t help but notice how peaceful the room was. Adam and Kasey were so kind and sweet. Sad that their baby girl had passed, but happy that they got to hold her, and kiss her, and spend time with her. It was honestly one of the most beautiful and touching things I’ve ever witnessed.

A few weeks later, after I had sent the images and slideshow, I received the sweetest “thank you” note from Kasey and Adam. In fact, I still have it pinned on my board in my office. . .

“Alexa, I honestly can’t express to you how grateful I am for what you have done for my family. We have looked at the pictures and watched the slideshow over and over again, and cried and cried. It’s the kind of crying we need, though. We were so blessed to get to work with you – you were so kind to my family, especially Annabelle, and you captured the most beautiful memories. You have given us something that comes as close as possible to actually being there with Annabelle. . . From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

It is this family, and this thank you note, that has kept me volunteering for NILMDTS for the past year and a half. I’ve served over eleven families so far and not all of them have been so kind. Some sessions have been way harder. And I know every family deals with grief differently but Kasey and Adam and Annabelle gave me the encouragement to keep providing this gift to other families.

Kasey shared with me this past fall that they were expecting another baby girl in February and hoped I could do some family portraits once she arrived. Enter baby Adeline. She’s a lucky, lucky girl to be part of this amazing family!

We started the morning with some portraits of Adeline on her changing table. Turns out, it’s one of her favorite places! Isn’t she beautiful?

I love this photo on the left, where Adeline is looking at her daddy.

This one kills me. She’s so stinkin’ adorable!!

She was mesmerized by the camera. . . Lucky me! I love her beautiful blue eyes :)

We called this a “sandwich kiss” in my family. . .

o

You can see where Adeline gets her good looks… And I like how she’s waving at the camera in the second picture!

We tried to get Adeline to smile the whole time and she just wouldn’t do it! I didn’t even know I caught this little half-smile until I looked at the images on my computer.

She wasn’t too happy about this hat at first. . .

. . . but then she was too tired to protest for long.

Kasey is such a gorgeous mama!

Another half-smile for daddy. . . Kasey said it’s almost a running joke now that Adeline only smiles at her dad! Hopefully that’ll change soon ;)

This teddy bear is in the photos we took of Annabelle at the hospital. I love that Adeline will grow up knowing about her big sister and how important they both are to this entire family!

Adam and Kasey – I’m so thankful that I got to take part in your family’s story again. You are both amazing parents and a blessing to be around!

I’m so glad that I got to visit him in the NICU to document this precious life. At just 4 + pounds, he’s a tiny little guy and Dee didn’t want to forget this stage of his life. . .

Isn’t he just adorable? He’s got perfect little lips. . .

Even the tiniest hats look big on him. . .

I love that he’s flashing the peace sign in this photo. . . It makes me laugh :)

He was so sleepy but kept opening his eyes to see what we were doing. . .

Sleepy guy!

We finished the session with a smile from Levi. I know that Dee and Jon can’t wait to have him home!

A few weeks ago I had the honor of photographing my Pastor’s wife and kids! Jonathan and I love our church dearly and it was so much fun to hang out with Tina and the kids, even though Pastor Allen couldn’t make it for the shoot. We had a beautiful sunny afternoon to work with and the kids were amazing!

I love this one…

Luke is the oldest. . .

. . . followed by Abby and Izzy. . .

Don’t they have the cutest smiles?

The kids were so excited about doing this series of photos. . .

Izzy is so precious :)

I love this photo of Izzy in the grass. . .

I’m pretty sure Izzy is a mama’s girl :)

I can’t wait to photograph you guys again! Hopefully next time, we’ll have the whole family around :)

You know how your life kind of happens in stages with your friends? There’s the kid stage, the high school stage, the college stage, the stage where you and all your friends are all dating somebody, the stage where everyone gets married, and the stage where they all start having babies. . . we’re in the baby stage now. The majority of our married friends are all mid-pregnancy or just announced the happy news. Though Jonathan and I aren’t quite there yet, we’re so excited for all of these new additions! It’s so fun to watch our friends move into the parenting stage, one by one (or two by two, I guess? haha). Amanda + Eric are some of our closest friends and are expecting baby Amelia to arrive sometime around Easter this year! I can’t wait to meet her :)

It was not a very nice day outside when we shot this session. . . thankfully Eric + Amanda weren’t bothered by the rain!

I love this beautiful smile! I hope Amelia gets that from you, Amanda ;)

These two couldn’t be more excited about their baby girl. . .

I’m pretty sure Amanda may not be able to see her feet anymore. . .

This is one of my favorites. . .

I love this profile of Amanda. . .  look at that belly sticking out!

I think this one is gorgeous. . .

Like I said, it wasn’t a very nice day but Amanda made the best of it and brought a cute umbrella along. . .

This is the verse that Eric + Amanda picked out for Amelia. . .

Amanda + Eric, we are so happy for you guys! Can’t wait to photograph you with your daughter in a few months!

This family session is pretty near and dear to my heart :) Aunt Kendra is my dad’s sister and we lived next door to their family for years and years. Now that all of the “kids” are older, moved away, starting families, and finishing (or starting!) college, it is rare that they can all get together at the same time. We decided to take advantage of the week of Christmas to get some family portraits of everyone together! From left to right : Uncle Phil, Aunt Kendra, Konni, Kelly, Katie, Kyle, Chrissie & Kirk and their kids, Elijah and Leah. Good looking group, right?

I’m pretty sure the babies of the family are everyone’s favorites. . .

We asked Elijah to give Leah a kiss… it was pretty close but not quite there!

Leah has beautiful blue eyes. . .

We made sure to get lots of good photos of the kids . . .

Little boys are the best!

My aunt and uncle are known as “Grandpa” and “Grandma” to these two cuties. . .

The sisters . . .

. . . and the brothers.

Kirk and Chrissie are expecting their third baby in just a few months!

Just had to get a portrait of the two that started it all ;)

This is a fun group of people… I’m so glad we got to spend some time together this Christmas!

Um, is Ryleigh precious or what? She just turned one and is so full of personality!

This pony wouldn’t leave us alone while we were shooting…

I hope Kinley and Ryleigh can enjoy these photos when they’re older. I love looking through old photos of my sisters and I together!

Some time with daddy…

… and some time with mommy…

… and some time with the cows! Kinley loves cows. I’m glad we got them to come a little closer to the fence.

We changed Ryleigh into a birthday tutu at the very end of the session. I love the colors!

I think she liked the cake…

Can I just tell you how much I love Summer rain showers? There’s one rolling in right now and I am in heaven! It’s so relaxing and totally cools everything down. Plus my tomato plants love it! The only time I dislike the rain is when it interrupts plans for shoots!

Thankfully, there weren’t any rain showers last week when I shot Shayla and Jeremy’s maternity session :) They are expecting their first baby girl in about a month. . . Stella. Don’t you love that name?

Jeremy is on our tech team at Daystar and he and I have a secret handshake. Yes, you read that right :) He and Shayla are super excited about finally meeting Stella and were so chill during their session. We basically just walked around and talked. It was so fun and relaxing!

I feel like this first photo is sooo Jeremy and Shayla. They are fun and silly and Jeremy just loves making people laugh. And Shayla has a great laugh. . .

Don’t they look good together?

Shayla is one hot mama!

I love this portrait of Shayla by herself.

One of my favorite photos that doesn’t show faces. It’s just gorgeous!

Jeremy totally rocks that look and he knows it! Just look at that face! I can’t wait to see him as a dad… he’s going to be great!

These swing photos were totally unposed. We saw a swing set and started talking about all kinds of sentimental things and just had to try it out. It made the perfect squeak!

I think this is a gorgeous classic portrait of Shayla. Her eyes are incredible!

Again with the laughing. Adorable.

Getting lovey-dovey.

During this shot, we decided we are starting a new band called “The third trimester”. This is our first band photo.

Jeremy and Shayla -  I know you will be fantastic parents and I can’t wait to meet baby Stella!

They don’t call it busy season for nothing! I shot six sessions in five days last week and, though I’m working hard on everything, it’ll be a while before every shoot makes it to the blog. So, enjoy this little preview while you’re waiting!

Natalie and Alex’s senior session. They are such good friends, they wanted to do their sessions at the same time! Along with photos of each of them, we shot some together.

Alex. . .

Natalie . . .

Joe and Tiffany’s engagement session.

Jeremy and Shayla. Maternity!

Full posts of each of these sessions are coming up soon! Along with a couple of bridal sessions that will be shared after the weddings :) Make sure to drop a comment and let me know whose post you’re waiting for!

Jessica and I went to school together and sometimes second shoot for each other (check out her website here!). She’s such a sweet, kind, person and I loved getting to know her better during this session! She and Simon are expecting their first baby in just a few months. I can’t wait to meet little Emeline!

We shot the session at the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough, NC. It’s such a gorgeous place!

They were so easy to shoot . . . Jessica makes a great laughing face and Simon makes her laugh a lot!

Isn’t she a gorgeous pregnant mama?

This location fit Jessica and Simon perfectly. They were so relaxed during the shoot!

Simon can’t wait to meet his daughter. He is going to be a good dad, I can tell!

My favorite portrait of Jessica . . .

At the end of our session, we stopped by the house where Simon was born and took a few pictures on the porch he played on as a toddler. I love incorporating sentimental places in sessions! I feel like this will be an extra special photo in the future.

Oh, you are in for a treat today :) Especially if you are anything like me and just love babies! Rennen’s family goes to Daystar Church with Jonathan and I and sometimes I get to watch Rennen in the nursery. He is one of the sweetest, most easygoing, cute little boys I know! I’m sure he has his moments, but anytime I see him he is just in his own little world with this adorably inquisitive look on his face.

We scheduled Rennen’s session on his first birthday last week and it went so well! Great weather, no meltdowns, and a cupcake from Maxie B’s to finish everything off!

This face kills me!!! So stinkin’ cute.

I love the way Rennen’s eyes are catching the light in this photo . . .

Showing off some dance moves . . .

Little bare feet . . .

I love this one. Rennen was fascinated with his shadow!

This little series reminds me of Peter Pan. . .

Rennen wasn’t too happy after his outfit change . . .

He was also a little confused by the cupcake. . .

. . . until he got his first bite!

This was the most calm first-cupcake-eating I’ve ever seen! Rennen just quietly munched on it until the end of the session.

Happy Birthday, Rennen!
